Should I stay in the pit?

No poker today - I got up and packed, dropped my bags off with the bellman at Bill's, and went exploring.

Walked up the strip, ate some breakfast at Harrah's buffet (yay coupons! Actually, I came to realize a long time ago that I do not share my father's appreciation of the free-for-all that is the buffet. Yes, I acknowledge that I've eaten at a buffet about 6 times this trip, but frankly that's been for time (and economy's) sake) and then walked around the venetian for a bit.

Hopped in a cab and headed down to freemont street, to see binion's casino - the original home of the world series - as well as the location of the poker hall of fame. 20 mins later, I was back in a cab returning to the strip. Freemont St kinda sucks...

The cabbie dropped me off at circus circus, which also sucked, so I walked towards the strip some more, ducking into casinos whenever I could for the AC. Finally I ended up in treasure island, watching a game called "crazy poker 4".

Basically you get five cards, and you make your best poker hand out of four of 'em. After watching for a few hands, I decided to play for a bit. Simple rule for me - I pulled out $100, and whatever I had left would buy me dinner. 0 and I go hungry, $15 and I get denny's, $300 and I go to Michael Mina.

A few hours later (and a lot of fun with the dealers / table) I left with $175. So it's really making me question the "I play poker because it's a skill game and the pit is for suckers" mentality...

As for dinner, unfortunately, all of the really nice places have dress codes that don't allow shorts, and I've already checked out... So here I am, in the bellagio buffet, eating another assembly line creme brule, watching some of the most impressive feats of engineering I've ever seen. Did you know that 30 crab legs can be piled onto one plate? I guess the guy didn't know that he can make TWO TRIPS!

My plane leaves at about 11:30, so I'll walk around the bellagio some more then head to the airport.

As for the end-of-trip analysis, the verdict is good. Yes, I would have enjoyed cashing in the tourneys, but such is tournament poker. It's a high variance activity. This is why we play to win, not to simply cash. The top 3's are what make it profitable, not the top 23's. Just playing in the tourneys was a boatload of fun. The two that I bubbled showed me that I can do well in them.

What would I do next time differently?

1) Come for the venetian deep stacks series. The wsop was fun, but I actually think the venetian series is better value for me. The daily tourneys are basically $340 or $560. Compare that to the $1500 that the WSOP events start at. (Ignoring the 1k this year - that was a one time thing.) They get fields of 500 and more, with top prizes of 50k and more. Good value for sure.

2) Bring Kim. I'm glad that Shaun came for a few days - this would have been a really long week alone. If we arranged things next time that we came down with another couple - perhaps shaun and jana - we could mix in poker with touristy stuff quite easily. Kim's concern coming this time was that I'd spend the whole time playing. Well, realistically. I'm going to bust out of tourneys. That leaves the rest of the day / evening.

Anyways - I'm now at the airport waiting for my now-delayed-by-an-hour flight. I hope you enjoyed following along as much as I enjoyed writing about the trip. Apologies for all spelling / grammatical errors - I wrote the majority of these updates either late at night, or on my blackberry, or both.

Busto - bubbled another one

Folded to me on the button - I shove KJo, called by both blinds (AJ and AQ).

A on turn seals the deal. I finish in 24th.

.

Sitting on 52.5k at the break

28 people left, avg stack is about 53k

Blinds are 3k/6k/500.

No special hands to mention - a few raises to steal the blinds, and one three-bet.

With these blinds, its going to an interesting bubble.

32k right now

About 45 people left - 18 get paid.

Blinds are getting high - 1.5 / 3k / 500

.

28k or so

Blinds are 600 / 800 / 25.

Fun little tourney...

.

JJ good - tripled up

Up to 20k
.

5650 at the break.

Need some chippies...
.

Another pro!

One of the guys from the final table of the wsop last year just sat down to my right.

I'll look up his name when I get back...

.

Last chance for me...

Playing the 2nd chance at the venetian - basically a turbo.

Start with 7500 chips, I'm sitting on 8500 right now, in the 2nd level.

Blinds are 100 / 200.
.

Phil Hellmuth

Over at the Rio, watching the last few tables of the $2500 2-7 NL tourney.

I'm standing right behind Barry Greenstein.

Phil Hellmuth just busted in 23rd spot (21 spots paid), and Tony G started ragging on him like there were 25 tv cameras around.

Phil was not happy... Very entertaining...

.

Yikes...

I'm busto - got it in with KK vs TT on a Q high flop - basically I'm 90% to win.

T on the river.

Sigh...

.

Chipping up...

KQo on button - 3 limpers - I limp. Sb completes, bb checks

Flop KQ7

Check to me - bet 750 - one caller - old guy who has been very passive - calling and folding.

Turn's another 7

He checks, I bet 1500 - figure a 7 gets him to raise, he calls with a lone K or Q. He folds, I'm up to about 13k.
.

Tougher table

In my other tourneys, the standard opening raise at the beginning was about 4 or 5 times the BB - sometimes more. That's too much - you're risking way too many chips to win too few. It's a sign that the players are not very good.

Standard raise, without antes, is generally three times the BB.

This table is raising 2.5 times. That's generally a sign that these guys know their stuff.

I'm hoping that it's just a case that the first guy bet 250 and so everybody else is copying him, but I'm not convinced.

.

Shuffle up and deal...

Just starting the venetian deep stacks tourney - 12k starting stack, blinds are 50 / 100 to start.
.

Tuesday, June 2, 2009

meh - busto....

AK > AQ on an AJx flop.

Let's see how tomorrow goes...

AK>QQ

Up to 14k - AK over QQ, all in pre-flop.
.

Venetian deep stack 2nd chance

At the 1st break of this tourney - 20 min levels, 7500 starting stack. Basically a turbo.

I'm sitting on about 8k, just a fun little tourney.
.

All in perspective

Busting out of today's event in the third level - before the payouts were even announced - sucked. No way to sugar coat it - it blows that I didn't last longer.

But let's put it into perspective. (And realize that I'm putting this into perspective in a restaurant in Vegas, sitting next to four Lambourghini's, after having eaten a delicious fillet with roquefort sauce and a few glasses of chianti)

This was an AMAZING experience / vacation. I've met / seen in person just about every living "star" of the poker world. Not only that, I played at their level... This is the all-star game of the poker world.

I've met many of the people that I only know "online" - some of whom I consider pretty good friends. These are people who I would trust - without hesitation - with large sums of money. And they feel the same way. Dantes (now Jer), swede (now Andy), Bond (Tony), SirWatts (Mike), Deeb (well, still Deeb) - was good to put faces to names...

And the vacation's not over. I'm registered in a tourney at seven tonight, and odds are I'll play another one at noon tomorrow. This is fun stuff.

But the thing that may have really put it into perspective for me most was a thread on 2+2 about behaviour at the tables. Basically, some pros were complaining about people coming up to them and "outing" them. Basically letting the fish know that they are pros. In that thread, one very well known pro - Shane "Shaniac" Schleger (sp?) responded to another guy who was mocking the fish for playing these high buyin events for entertainment by saying that playing poker for fun is something he would LOVE to be able to say he does.

That's the level I'm at. But more than that, I have a fundamental understanding of the game and of the strategy, which gives me a realistic chance at these tournaments.

I see these people playing for a living - guys that are really good at the game - but they've lost the love of it. What's the point of playing if it's work for you? (Then again, I know people who make a lot less doing a job they hate a lot more...)

So I feel like I've got the best of both worlds - the satisfaction of knowing that I know what I'm doing, along with the excitement that comes from only doing it once-in-a-while.

So to the inevitable bunch who will say to me that I "lost" on this trip - I may not have won, but there's no chance that I lost.

.

Busto

Completed the sb with QT, bb checks.

Flop comes 9JK, two clubs.

I check, bb bets, I check raise all-in, bb calls with a flush draw.

Turn is the 3c - gg greg
.

3k at the break

Blinds are 75 / 150 - let's gogogo!
.

Two pair no good

Two limpers to me in the bb, I hold 57o. Check, flop comes 57Q rainbow.

I bet out, button calls, SB folds.

Turn J

I bet, button calls.

River 4

I bet, button turns over Q4 - nice river...

I'm down to 2800 chips - starting stack was 4500.

Blinds are now 50 / 100, so I've got a stack to work with, but I definitely liked my stack before that hand.
.

Better table...

4 of the guys came to the table and didn't know what a seat number was. That's a good thing.

.

Spicy omen?

Sitting in the rio buffet, having some breakfast before the tourney, and I was thinking "jeez, this music sucks".

Next song - the Spice Girls.

I love the Spice Girls... Reminds me of good times at Mac - going to see the movie at midnight in a snowstorm, drunken nights at the Rat, etc...

Hope these mental powers can translate to me being able to halt a bad run of cards.

.

$1.5k today

The 1.5k starts at noon. I got a good night's sleep, so I'm feeling good about playing well today. Off to have some breakfast then I'll head over to the Rio.
